PE Curriculum Overviews

PE at Highfield J&I School

“Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong” - John F Kennedy.

Intent:

Skills and knowledge are developed and embedded through a specifically planned out curriculum that builds over time. This ensures that there is consistency in our approach to pedagogy and practice. Throughout their time at Highfield we ensure that every child has the opportunity to be active, develop their understanding of the importance of physical education and how physical activity plays a vital part in living a healthy life. We believe that through our comprehensive and progressive curriculum, offer we can provide the platform for children to:

• Develop their social skills.

• Become physically literate through an emphasis on developing fundamental movement skills.

• Develop competency in technical skills and be able to apply them in practise.

• Make positive decisions such as selecting the best skill or strategy.

• Ignite a child’s interest in physical wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle in order to establish positive lifestyle habits.

Implementation:

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Physical Education, our curriculum is mapped out, progressively, with threads that reappear. This is implemented across school. The curriculum is based upon the Get set4PE programme and aligns with 2014 the national curriculum. The curriculum is broad and balanced, enabling children to cover and develop their skills in a wide range of disciplines. Our children cover 1-2 units per half term with some being revisited throughout their time at Highfield, providing further opportunities to develop and refine skills, stamina, technique and/or strategy. Retrieval at the start of each lesson ensures that children develop and embed skills and knowledge. Children in Reception are allocated two hours of physical development time in addition to the physical development provision offered within the EYFS environment. Pupils in both KS1 and KS2 engage in two hours of PE each week covering two different disciplines every half term.

Swimming is taught as a unit of work at school. Swimming is recognised as an imperative part of the children’s development and further opportunities to swim will always be sought out where possible. Water safety is also taught as part of the swimming curriculum.

Impact:

Our Physical education curriculum is high quality, well thought out and demonstrates progress within and across year groups. As the curriculum is the progression model, children’s ongoing work and final outcomes demonstrates their progress and achievement. The impact of the curriculum is measured through:

- Children’s knowledge and understanding throughout each unit of work

- Summative assessment at the end of a unit of work

- Annual reporting of pupil outcomes

- Children’s understanding and use of key vocabulary

- Pupil conferencing
